Laina’s List for iPhone · Effective 13 October 2026 · Updated for shared lists
The short version. Laina’s List has no account, no sign-in, no ads, no analytics and no tracking. Everything you save stays on your iPhone, except a list you choose to share: that one is kept in iCloud, by Apple, for you and the people you invite. We (the developer) run no server and never receive or see your lists, places, plans, name or location.
What the app keeps, and where
These are stored only on your iPhone, in the app’s own storage (iOS UserDefaults):
- your lists and their items, your saved places (name, position, address, rating, note), your plans and your own date ideas;
- the first name you chose for the greeting, if you gave one, and the area place search looks in;
- the light or dark theme, which quotes were shown recently, and when you last exported a backup.
Like other app data, this is included in your iPhone’s own backups (iCloud Backup or a computer backup) if you have those turned on; that is between you and Apple, under Apple’s privacy policy. Nothing is sent to us.
What leaves your iPhone
The app works offline except for the map and place search, which come from two free services run by other organisations. The app sends them only what each request needs, and nothing that identifies you by name or account:
| Map tiles OpenFreeMap |
When the Places tab shows the map, your iPhone downloads map images and styles from tiles.openfreemap.org, as any map does. Those requests show which part of the map is on screen, and, like any internet request, your IP address. OpenFreeMap’s privacy policy. |
|---|---|
| Place search Photon by komoot |
When you search (three letters or more) the text you typed is sent to photon.komoot.io, with the middle of the map rounded to about a kilometre (so nearer places come first) and, unless you chose “Anywhere”, the area to search in. When you drop a pin, its position (rounded to about 10 metres) is sent so the app can name what is there. Requests carry a header naming the app and its version (LainasList/1.0.0), and your IP address. komoot’s privacy policy. |
We do not receive, store or see any of these requests, and the app shares nothing else with these services. Apart from iCloud for lists you share (below), the app makes no other network requests.
Lists you share
You can share a single list with people you choose (Share this list in the list). Lists you do not share never leave your iPhone. When you share one:
- The list and its items are stored with Apple’s CloudKit in your iCloud account, and the people you invite reach it through theirs. Apple keeps this data under Apple’s privacy policy. CloudKit does not let us, the developer, read anyone’s private or shared iCloud data, and the app stores the list’s contents in CloudKit’s encrypted fields.
- Invitations go through Apple’s own sharing screen (Messages, Mail, AirDrop or a link). The app never sees the phone number or email address you invite.
- Everyone in a shared list can see and change it. The app shows the names iCloud gives for the people in it, and who last changed each item.
- Stop sharing removes the list from iCloud; the others keep a copy on their phones that no longer changes. Leave this list removes it from your iPhone; the others keep it.
- Sharing needs an iCloud account. If you sign out of iCloud, shared lists stop syncing and stay on your iPhone as ordinary lists.
Your location
The app asks for your location only when you tap Show where I am on the map, and only while you are using the app. It is used on your iPhone to centre the map, is never saved, and is never sent anywhere by itself. If you then search, the search uses the middle of the map, rounded as described above. You can turn location off at any time in the iPhone’s Settings app; everything else keeps working.
Backups you export
When you choose Export a backup, the app writes one file and hands it to the iOS share sheet. It goes only where you send it (Files, iCloud Drive, AirDrop, Mail and so on). Restoring reads a file you pick and changes nothing until you confirm.
What we do not do
- No accounts, sign-in, analytics, crash reporting, advertising or tracking of any kind.
- No selling or sharing of data, because we do not have any. (Sharing a list with someone is something you do, through Apple; we are not part of it.)
- No contacts, photos, microphone, camera or health data.
Deleting your data
Remove anything inside the app, or delete the app to remove everything it kept on your iPhone. To remove a shared list from iCloud, open it and choose Stop sharing (or delete the list); you can also remove the app’s iCloud data in the iPhone’s Settings app (your name → iCloud → Manage Account Storage). Copies in your own iPhone backups or exported backup files stay under your control. There is nothing for us to delete, because we hold nothing.
Children
The app is suitable for everyone and collects no personal information from anyone, children included.
Changes
If this policy changes, the new version will be posted here with a new effective date. If the app ever starts sending something new off your iPhone, this page will say so before that version is released.
